Makeshift Update

We discovered Natalie Purschwitz's Vancouver store "Hunt & Gather" a few years back on a summertime getaway. Awed by her cerebral designs and art-studio meets boutique space in Gastown, she added fuel to our fire as we started our first art-meets-fashion pop-ups in Seattle 07. Natalie still runs Hunt & Gather, but recently started MakeShift, an art/research project where for one year she will only wears things that she has made herself. Again, we are awed. From the MakeShift Blog: "MakeShift is an art and research project that examines the relationships between 'making', 'clothing' and 'living'. The basic premise for the project is that for a period of one year starting on September 1st, 2009, I will only wear things that I have made myself. Initially this may seem like a reasonable task, but it will include all of my clothes, socks, shoes, underwear, coats, jackets, hats, bathing suits, accessories and anything else I might need to protect my body from the elements while trying to lead a fulfilling life."

Design obsession: a talking animatronic fox

For me, the highpoint in Lars von Trier's visually stunning horror film, Antichrist, 
is the talking fox muttering "chaos reigns" in a monster voice.

Something is stirring - nature-as-evil was also evident in a store window in Soho.

Our night was all about OPTIMISM and FREE: We enjoyed inspirational art on our Metro card on the way to the Performa /Jonas Mekas peformance, where jonas pontificated amidst his archival film footage, captured throughout the decades - warhol, john and yoko, the 80's. He yelled, "It all depends on us!" - "not the government, not the politicans, just you and me and the moment" - a profound and joyful rant, backed by avant jazz and drums from Wollesonic Laboratories. Free performance, free booze at the event (of course we filled the tip jar), followed by free burgers (which we cooked ourselves) at a new LES store opening. Optimism and sharing. Let's hope this is the sign of new times.

It took the Biblical God seven days to make a new world. All the party designer Jennifer Rubell needed was Friday night. To benefit Performa 09, the three-week biennial of performance art under way on stages all over town, Rubell’s creation story involved an inspired D.I.Y. dinner that brought the R.E.M. front man Michael Stipe, the artist Cindy Sherman, the avant-garde director Robert Wilson, the chef Mario Battali and nearly 600 other unsuspecting guests to the X Initiative (formerly the Dia Art Center)Chelsea.
